Temperature and Humidity Acquisition for Geotechnical Projects
In geotechnical engineering, changes in temperature and humidity directly affect the stability of rock and soil masses. Weeks of continuous rainfall are often accompanied by an increased risk of landslides, but without accurate temperature and humidity collection data, early warning systems are useless. The temperature and humidity collection solution provided by Kingmach is not for stack parameters, but to solve such practical monitoring problems. Our sensors and data loggers are designed for long-term monitoring in the field and can adapt to harsh environments such as foundation pits, tunnels or dams. Through low-power design and multiple communication interfaces, data can be seamlessly connected to existing monitoring networks. Many projects only discovered after customizing the housing or specific measurement range that temperature and humidity collection can be so suitable for on-site needs.
Technical Detail
When it comes to temperature and humidity collection, the first thing many colleagues think of is weather stations. But in geotechnical monitoring, things are not that simple. The sensor may have to be buried in the soil for half a year. It must be protected from moisture and corrosion, and it must also read normally at -20°C. Kingmach's temperature and humidity acquisition unit uses industrial-grade sensor components, with long-term drift control within common levels in the industry, meeting most accuracy requirements for slope and foundation pit monitoring. The sampling interval can be set from a few minutes to a few hours, and with built-in storage, data will not be lost even if the power is turned off. The output interface supports RS485/Modbus and can be directly connected to PLC, DTU or local data collector. Many projects have connected it to their own platforms. For open-air environments, we provide housings with protection levels above IP67. The length and material of cables and mounting brackets can be customized according to the project. As a manufacturer that focuses on geotechnical instruments, Kingmach may have a more sensitive understanding of monitoring sites than general sensor manufacturers - we have seen too many equipment fail because a small screw rusted. Therefore, from circuit board conformal coating to connector selection, we are consciously moving towards long-term reliability. If you need to collect soil moisture content, temperature, and conductivity at the same time, we can also integrate related probes. A global distribution network means technical support is not necessarily time-laged, and spare parts and repair responses are faster. In the final analysis, the difficulty in collecting temperature and humidity is not whether the measurement is accurate, but whether the equipment can survive until the end of the project. Most solutions use wired transmission, such as leading to a collector or DTU through an RS485 cable. For distant measuring points, a small wireless node can be installed near the sensor and uploaded using LoRa or 4G. It depends on whether there is power supply and signal coverage at the site.
Weather station sensors are usually exposed to the air, while geotechnical monitoring sensors may need to be buried in soil or concrete for a long time, which requires higher waterproofing, anti-corrosion, and mechanical strength. In addition, the response time of the probe we use will be slower, but the long-term stability is better, and it is more suitable for low-frequency collection.
Under normal circumstances, the design life of industrial-grade temperature and humidity sensors is more than 5 years, but they are actually greatly affected by environmental corrosion. It is recommended to return to the factory for calibration once a year, especially as humidity parameters are prone to drift. We have cooperative calibration points at home and abroad, and the process is not complicated.
Yes. As long as the platform supports the standard Modbus protocol, our temperature and humidity acquisition modules can communicate directly. If a customized project requires a specific data format, we can also modify the firmware before leaving the factory, which is not a major change.
Currently, standard products do not have explosion-proof certification, but we can provide integrated solutions for projects with explosion-proof requirements, such as with explosion-proof housing or intrinsically safe circuit design. It is best to communicate with us for such needs in the early stages of the project to avoid later rectifications.
